I'm a truck driver with over 3.5 million miles since 1993. Yeah, that number is right. The feds put stricter regulations on us and they do not nothing about parking. I get paid 30% of the contract. I have Park Smart system on the truck which greatly reduces idling. Most trucks have a system like this and team driving sucks. The self driving systems is not practical. The autonomous truck thing here is a myth. No company is going to pay for a truck, a system to drive the truck and the driver on top of that. Never will happen until all vehicles go driverless.

Why not put solar panels on the top of the semi-trailers that way at least some of the energy needed for ancillary stops and things can come from that energy. Main reason it prolly won't happen is due to cost but the government could offer subsidies to truckers/companies that do that. Again, probably never happen since our government moves along at the pace of a snail stuck in molasses on a cold day.

My father is a trucker from a family of truckers and yes they are a dying breed. The company he is working for is always starving for "good" drivers as so many new truckers come from these "schools" and dont really understand the intricacies of the truck. I also believe normal people should be taught more about trucks as most wrecks are cause by fools not understanding a big rig cant stop like your prius. Its called physics.

So a Tesla electric truck driven in a convoy of driverless vehicles with only the head truck having 2 people in it (with a bigger sleeping quarters) using the data that Tesla collects for highway and even local roads will lead to vastly cheaper costs for transport. I wonder how this will effect train transport? I would think trains would still be better to transport way more items cross country. There are some Tesla truck challengers like Hyliion of which I believe uses either natural gas or hydrogen and can be used on current trucks as opposed to building out a whole new truck. But admittingly Tesla has the edge due to self driving. Tesla's shares are about to go to the moon lol I better get some fractional shares of that cause aint no way I can get it at 1000 right now. What a time we are living in!

Its easy to think trucks could become semi-automated convoys on the long stretches of almost empty interstate in rural areas. But imagine being on the freeway next to one of these road trains when you suddenly realize you need you to exit right. You won't be able to cut into the middle of that road train because the computers will be keeping the trucks too close together. You won't be able to slow down and cut in behind the road train without risking a pileup. I can't see this working well because of things like that.

A misperception that the video gives that should be sorted out has to do with idling the truck when parked. The percentage of trucks that idle during downtime is small. Most have either Auxiliary Power Units (mentioned in the video but not to the level actually out there) or Idle Management Systems that charge a large bank of batteries used for living, separate from the bank of batteries used for powering the truck, headlights, etc... These Idle Management Systems recognize when the battery packs are getting low and fire up the Diesel engine just long enough to top off the batteries, usually for 10-20 minutes once or twice a night if not in extreme cold or heat. Even in extreme cold or heat, the idle time on a managed system is a fraction of what it would be for straight idling the truck. Also, teams can be married couples, but that is not 'often' as mentioned. The percentage of married couples is actually pretty low. Also, 35¢ per mile is sh*t pay. It equates to well below minimum wage by the time one calculates unpaid time one has to put in, slow traffic, the way mileage is calculated . It's not 'hub' miles, but a formula (usually a shortest route from zip code to zip code in OTR/longhaul driving) in a way that is less, sometime much less, then actual miles driven. Most modern trucks average over 7mpg and often get over 8mpg in areas without city traffic, much stop/go and/or grade changes. This may not sound like much of a difference from 6mpg, but in trucking, performance ratings hang on .1mpg differences.

If not the truckers, I doubt a government would pass a law allowing for 70% of their transportation workers to go unemployed for a computer.

I find it comical, we're it were not so tragic. In the move to automate so many jobs, the merchants doom themselves to oblivion. Automated trucks take singularity skilled people out of the economy. Fewer consumers mean far less disposable income which means far less hamburgers sold, meaning far less need to transportation supplies increasing the costs for transporting. The spill over from this automation debacle crosses over into all consumer products and retailers. The exponential loss to the economy is staggering. If there are no entry level jobs, or sustaining jobs the economy suffers. This increases unemployment costs, lessens tax income and reduces consumer spending. Remember, you don't actually need a recession to tank the economy, you just need for consumers to think there's a recession and they will create one.

Some notices: 1. USA are not very representative because of long distances and relatively poor railways. In many counstries land long-route freight transport is shifted more towards rails. 2. Mass adoption of electric trucks undoubtedly will drive demand for diesel fuel down and for electricity up, so the balanced cost will certainly meet somewhere in between - roughly in vicinity of 0.30$/mile. 3. I'm not so sure when or how they plan to turn trucking into something that is mostly autonomous. Because of the variables. Even out on the freeway there are a TON of variables that I doubt anything we have with our current technology can handle. A truck driver isn't just a regular driver, they're also crucial for the maintenance of the truck and also while most roads are standard size not all of them are maintained as well as you would imagine and there's also the weather which greatly affects trucking. For example: I drove a rig for a while, it had a supposedly high tech system that would alert us of conditions and of the vehicles around us and it sucked because it didn't take everything other then what it thought was correct seriously, it would also engage the brakes/slow us down or make a racket through the speakers on it's own if it felt there was a hazard. Which was a major annoyance since it would sometimes start to engage them if the lines weren't painted properly or whatever and not all the information that the system would pass over to us was correct, it would give us a route to follow, through GPS. It wasn't uncommon for it to say that the bridge up ahead had enough clearance for the rig to pass under, when it clearly didn't. Some roads may say that it had just or close enough clearance to pass, but it had been worked on and they laid a extra inch or two of asphalt which for a regular car is ok But for a rig, that is a major risk, it happens on several occasions and when we would deviate from the path because we knew better but it would ping the dispatcher and they would flip out, because there was no way these super expensive gadgets would supposedly know better.
