In Spanish and other languages that have gendered words, masculine words are often also considered neutral words. “Muchachos” can refer to a group of men or a mixed group, but “muchachas” can only refer to a group of women. I only took two years of Spanish in high school, but since then I’ve always seen “male” words as something that can be neutral and “female” words as something only for women. It made me feel kind of special :) So masking out female words seems silly to me. So does making masculine-neutral words like “mailman” into “mailwoman,” though it doesn’t bother me and I sometimes do that as well now. Words are powerful things. Changing them is ok if it causes better communication in society, but you have to do it in a way that makes sense and allow natural change or you’ll cause more confusion.

I haven't read Dr Seuss' books so I don't exactly know the context, however I would rather use such books to help children develop critical thinking and to be able to spot racism and prejudice instead of outright banning them. Hiding things won't make them go away. If we don't give the next generations the tools to understand why racism and sexism etc are wrong we won't progress as a society.
